Eurosceptic Conservative MPs have warned UK prime minister Rishi Sunak that a key part of his new Brexit deal with the EU is “useless”.

The deal, unveiled last month, is designed to resolve issues over post-Brexit trading arrangements in Northern Ireland.

On Wednesday, MPs will vote on some elements of the deal, including the “Stormont brake”, which allows members of Northern Ireland’s devolved assembly to object to new EU rules.

Mark Francois, chair of the European Research Group of pro-Brexit Tory MPs, on Tuesday signalled concerns over the deal. “The Stormont brake is practically useless and the framework itself has no exit, other than through a highly complex legal process,” he told reporters.

This is a developing story.
