Obviously the company knows its market since the Kickstarter campaign was quickly funded by 711 backers, earning over nine times the original goal. It then moved to IndieGogo where it has earned $57,618 from an additional 880 backers.

According to Uphold Cutlery, 100 million plastic utensils are discarded in the U.S. every day. That amount of waste is inconceivable. Much of that plastic waste ends up polluting beaches and oceans where it disrupts marine ecology and ends up in the seafood we eat in the form of microplastics. Yuck!

However, Uphold Cutlery’s idea is simple — to design durable, non-toxic, portable cutlery you can take anywhere. In total, the three-piece fork, knife and spoon set into a small case is a bit bigger than a credit card and smaller than your cellphone. The ultra compact design measures 3.9 inches high, 2.6 inches wide, and a thin .4 inches deep. When removed from the case, the utensils themselves extend to around six inches in length. The company claims this is the lightest and smallest set on the market. The price is comparable or less than competitors too.

Additionally, the Uphold Cutlery set is made from food-grade TPU/TPE, aluminum alloy and titanium alloy so all parts are recyclable. The handles slide into each utensil head, making them easy to assemble, disassemble, wash and store. The company offers replacement heads in case of loss or damage, so you don’t have to replace the entire set.

With states like California taking steps to ban single use plastic, making the move now will not only help the environment, but it will prepare you for the inevitable changes that are coming our way.
