Here’s a trip Down Under you don’t want to take.
Health officials in Australia are sounding the alarm after several residents became ill following the consumption of “toxic” — and hallucinogenic — spinach.
New South Wales Health warned that Riviera Farms-branded spinach products bought at Costco “are not safe to consume” after nine people from four unrelated Sydney homes needed medical treatment from poisoning caused by the products.
Dr. Darren Roberts from the NSW Poisons Information Centre, told the Sydney Morning Herald each person became “quite sick.”
“The patients that have been quite unwell have been to the point of marked hallucinations where they are seeing things that aren’t there,” he said. “They can’t give a good recount of what happened.
“No one has died, so we’re very happy with that and we hope it remains that way, but these people are quite sick.”
Symptoms also included delirium or confusion, dilated pupils, accelerated heartbeat, flushed face, blurred vision, dry mouth and skin and fever.
Officials said the products seemed to have been contaminated by accident.
After testing the patients and the remaining spinach, Roberts said they were “pretty confident with the type of chemical that’s caused it.”
Local authorities are working to determine whether other regions have been affected.
