The community is celebrating a momentous occasion for an inspiring Indiana teen.
Seventeen-year-old Kayla Spangler is nearing a two-year fight with cancer. Doctors predict she now has just days to live.
Today, she’s checked yet another milestone off her bucket list, graduating from high school.
Spangler is the oldest and first of three siblings to graduate. friends, family, and teachers all rallied in support.
“When she walked into my class second semester last year, I had no idea who Kayla was, and boy did I fall in love with this kid,” said Tanya Wertz, teacher.
Doctors diagnosed Spangler with glioblastoma in the fall of 2020. She’s been through brain surgery, chemo and radiation treatments. Spangler managed to continue school up until last month, leading up to today’s graduation.
“It’s amazing. It’s like a dream come true,” said Maggie Gabbard, best friend.
“It couldn’t have happened at a better time. And I’m glad that she got to do this before it was too late,” said Lindsey Spangler, mother.
Doctors are now giving her just 48 to 72 hours to live. The community and her favorite celebrity, Dwayne “the rock” Johnson are rallying behind her and her family.
“I know that you are fighting hard keep fighting and inspiring everyone around you including now. you are my biggest fan, I am your biggest fan,” Johnson said.
It’s a week of celebration, making every hour count. On Thursday, the community is coming together once again — this time to give Kayla an early Christmas celebration.
