A 9-year-old boy survived an attack that killed three of his family members at Maquoketa Caves State Park Campground in Iowa on Friday, according to the mayor of Cedar Falls. Four people died in what investigators say was a triple homicide at the state park.The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation says three members of a family from Cedar Falls were found dead in a tent. They are identified as 42-year-old Tyler Schmidt, 42-year-old Sarah Schmidt and 6-year-old Lula Schmidt.DCI has named 23-year-old Anthony Sherwin, of La Vista, Nebraska, as the suspect. Investigators found Sherwin dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was found just west of the park. Arlo, the 9-year-old son of Tyler and Sarah, survived the attack, according to Cedar Falls Mayor Rob Green. He posted that information on his Facebook page Saturday morning. He said the boy is safe.The mayor also said Sarah was an employee at Cedar Falls Public Library. “The Cedar Falls Library will be closed tomorrow (Sunday) for the sake of staff who loved and worked with Sarah,” Green said in his Facebook post.Green said he knew the family well.”Like many of you just hearing the news, I’m devastated,” Green said. “I knew Sarah well, and she and her family were regular walkers here in the Sartori Park neighborhood.”Green added, “Please offer some extra grace to the Schmidt’s many friends, neighbors and co-workers as we try to process this horrible tragedy.”Service and other memorial information is expected to be announced in the coming days.Handwritten posters made by children in the Cedar Falls community have already been made to memorialize Sarah. A GoFundMe has been set up by family for young Arlo’s sake.Meanwhile, the DCI continues its investigation.
