SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — More than six months after the crime, the final suspect in that case has been arrested.
The case is in rural Lincoln County shooting that left a man with a bullet lodged in his brain.
Authorities have been looking for Rakeem Fitzgerald, 20, since May. He’s from Pennsylvania but was in South Dakota at the time of the crime. Fitzgerald is accused of aiding and abetting attempted murder and was booked into jail Tuesday morning.
Here’s a look back at the case.
According to court documents, it started with a drug deal outside a bar on the west side of Sioux Falls on April 30.
A 24-year old man and a 15-year old were in one car. The four teenage suspects were in the other.
Court documents say someone in the car full of teens “took possession of the drugs but did not pay…” so the 24-year-old followed their car.
They eventually ended up in rural Lincoln County, where the car full of teens stopped in the road.
The affidavit says the front passenger… exited the car, pulled a silver handgun out of his waistband area and shot…”
One bullet “struck the windshield,” and hit the driver in the head, lodging itself in the “frontal lobe of his brain.” The driver survived.
Four people are accused in the case.
Court documents say Victor Rios pulled the trigger. He’s scheduled to go on trial for attempted murder in January. Antonio Hacker, Danai Cha and Rakeem Fitzgerald are accused of aiding and abetting attempted murder. Hacker pleaded guilty earlier this month and is scheduled to be sentenced next month. Cha is out on bond, and Fitzgerald is schedule to be arraigned on Monday.
