SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Six people were injured in a two-vehicle fiery accident near Larchwood, Iowa Thursday. An off-duty police officer pulled several people to safety.
According to the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office website, Lance Haugen of Glendive, MT was driving a Ford Raptor northbound on Beech Ave. Haugen approached the intersection at 140th Street & Beech Ave., failed to stop at the stop sign and struck a Chevy Traverse driven by Marvin Winkle of George, Iowa.
The passenger side of the Chevy was hit. The Chevy went into the northeast ditch and caught fire.
The Ford rolled before coming to rest on the passenger side.
Off-duty Lennox, S.D. Police Officer Ismael Small came across the accident just after it occurred. Small pulled four people out of the burning Chevy and pulled one person out of the Ford. Small rendered care to the injured before and after emergency medical services arrived.
One person was air-lifted and five people were transported by ground ambulance to Sioux Falls hospitals.
The accident is still being investigated. Names of the other injured are not available.
