SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – Three families in Sioux Falls are getting a new home thanks to a grant benefiting Habitat for Humanity.

Ali Osmn and his family are helping to build a house they’ll soon be able to call home.

“You know, to have a house is really nice so the whole family is like really excited,” Osmn said.

His family is one of the recipients of a Habitat for Humanity house made possible by a grant of $50,000 from the Wells Fargo Foundation.

“I mean, the support is absolutely amazing,” Rocky Welker, executive director for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sioux Falls, said. “You know, the partnership with Wells Fargo is not only is it helping build homes, but it’s helping build community.”

What’s also unique about the house is that students at Harrisburg High School helped build it. The students built the frame and then it was moved on site to be finished by volunteers and the family.

“Workforce development is so important in our community right now,” Welker said. “To be able to get those students involved and engaged at a younger age hoping that they either maybe go into their career field or go on to post-secondary education where they can study some sort of construction trade or skill trade. It’s just a huge asset to our community right now.”

Partnerships that mean the world to Habitat families as well.

“That’s a life change,” Osmn said.

Harrisburg High School is the newest school that Habitat for Humanity is partnering with to help build homes. Welker says the Wells Fargo grant was a huge help in making that partnership possible.

Other schools Habitat works with are Southeast Technical College and Sioux Falls CTE Academy.
