INDIANAPOLIS — Five people were shot on the south side of Indianapolis on Sunday night.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers were dispatched to Laurelwood Apartments, which are located in the 3200 block of Teakwood Drive, around 8:15 p.m. on a report of a disturbance. After officers were initially called to the area, law enforcement received an additional report that indicated a person had been shot at the scene.

When police made it to the area, they located five victims with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds. All five of the individuals were hospitalized, per IMPD.

Law enforcement reported that one of the victims is in critical condition. The other four are believed to be in serious condition.

IMPD indicated that one of the victims is a 17-year-old boy. The other victims were all adults — three women and one man. The victim in critical condition is a male, though IMPD has not specified if the 17-year-old boy or the man was more seriously injured in the shooting.

Police detained one person during their investigation, though that person’s exact role in the incident, if any, is currently unknown.

According to IMPD, the shooting stemmed from a dispute that started at a nearby basketball court.

“This is a close, tight-knit community,” IMPD Night Watch Captain John Arvin said during a media briefing. “It’s terrible to have something like this over a basketball disturbance. We have young kids out playing … Sunday night, humid weather, people get upset. They need to find other ways to calm their disturbance and make it safer for the whole community.”

Police do not believe the incident poses any ongoing threat to the community. IMPD’s aggravated assault detectives are still investigating the shooting.

As of this article’s publication, no additional information on the disturbance had been made available.
