If there is any social network that is present the most in our everyday lives, it is likely Facebook. 3 Billion people are thought to use the network every month, and when it comes to finding local content relative to your interests, odds are good you can do it there.

We may be biased here, because we maintain a strong presence on Facebook too (check out our page here), but it is true that you can find just about everything on the network- good, bad, or otherwise.

In this one, we thought we’d take a dive into some of the best Facebook groups out there that are Pittsburgh focused. Ranging from things to do to food, buy nothing groups, neighborhood groups, and more, you really can get a lot of information just by joining a few groups!

Things to Do in Pittsburgh

We kick off our roundup of great Facebook groups with one we are immensely biased for, our own- Things to Do in Pittsburgh.

This is our private Facebook group all about experiences in Pittsburgh and southwest Pennsylvania. With over 130,000 members, the group receives dozens if not hundreds of posts per day featuring events, attractions, restaurants, activities, and more in the region.

Have an event coming up you’d love to share? You’re welcome to do so in the group. Want to ask a question about everything “things to do in Pittsburgh”? You can do that too!

Just note that with this being a private group, entry to the group and posts are moderated before they go live. Please read the group rules prior to joining as some posting types are limited.

Love food? Particularly cooking food, going out for food, or just eating? The popular Facebook group, Pittsburgh Foodies, is your place to check out for all things food!

Posts in the group range from asking for restaurant recommendations, sharing photos and personal reviews, and upcoming food events to name a few.

Pittsburgh Photography

Pittsburgh Photography is the second Facebook group that we personally manage and, as its name implies, is all about photos of Pittsburgh!

Much like Things to Do in Pittsburgh, we started this group to have a dedicated place for all photographers to share photos of Pittsburgh and southwest Pennsylvania in a public setting.  All local, all photos (and limited video), and just a great place to share your own work and support other photographers (professional, amateur, or otherwise) in the region.

Pittsburgh Neighborhood Groups

One of our favorite parts about Facebook is that you can find your local communities in just a few clicks. While we cannot say that every neighborhood or borough has a popular Facebook group, we can say that many do.

We like these groups because they’re the quickest way to get updated on things going on in your neighborhood or borough, be it about street cleaning, porch pirates, construction, lost animals, and more.

Some we know of include Mexican War Street Neighbors, Squirrel Hill, and Around North Hills to name a few.  That said, these are just a sampling, so be sure to search and see what you can find near you!

So take a look at the search function and see what active communities exist in your area.

Buy Nothing Groups

The trend of a “buy nothing” group has grown all over the world, as unwanted-but-still-good items can find a new home within the local community. Those who are looking to get rid of an item will simply post what it is, share any imperfections or issues that may exist, and those who are interested can comment about wanting to come pick it up.

While pick-up rules may vary, including first-come first-served claiming, random draw, or something else depending on the group and/or poster, these groups can really be helpful for those looking for an item they may not necessarily want to buy (or are able to at the moment).

In the past, we’ve had great finds in our local buy nothing group including plants and cuttings, a small table for our mail, wine glasses, paw paws, pots for plants, and so much more. We’ve also personally listed wall art, old records, furniture, and other items we were getting rid of and wanted to place in a loving home.

Some buy nothing groups we know of include Buy Not a Thing North Side, Buy Nothing Squirrel Hill, Buy Nothing Bloomfield/East Liberty, and more. So search around your area and see if a Buy Nothing group pops up!

Of course, the above groups are just a few suggestions to get you started in finding local Pittsburgh communities on Facebook. You really can take any interest and see if there is an active group worth checking out. First start at city level, then dive down deeper to your local area to see if any more focused groups come out!
