GREENSBURG, Ind. — Five people were injured after a vehicle crashed into a restaurant in downtown Greensburg Tuesday night.
Officers with the Greensburg Police Department responded around 6:23 p.m. to 117 N. Broadway Street, the listed address for Carriage On The Square Smokehouse, after the Decatur County Communications Center received reports of a personal injury crash in the area that left multiple civilians injured.
GPD said officers arrived on the scene and found a grey Honda Passenger vehicle that had crashed into the front end of the restaurant. FOX59/CBS4 confirmed that multiple people were eating outside the restaurant before the vehicle hopped the curb and crashed into them.
GPD confirmed the driver of the vehicle was 83-year-old Cleo Duncan, the former Indiana State Representative for District 67. Duncan served from 1994 until 2010.
At one point during the incident, two people were critically injured after being trapped beneath the vehicle, according to GPD. One of the responding officers applied a tourniquet to the injured individual after they were removed from beneath the vehicle.
The crash resulted in a total of seven people, including Duncan, being evaluated by medical emergency personnel on scene. GPD confirmed that two victims were airlifted to the University of Cincinnati Hospital in critical condition.
Two more individuals were transported to Decatur County Memorial Hospital where they were last reported to be in stable condition. GPD said the other three individuals refused treatment on scene.
The Indiana State Police Accident Reconstruction Team also assisted at the scene.
Carriage On The Square Smokehouse confirmed to FOX59/CBS4 that the business is likely to remain closed for the remainder of the week.
The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.
