At least two people were killed and another 20 injured after a brutal collision that sent a pair of cars flying into a crowd watching an annual Memorial Day parade held in Nebraska’s capital city.
The crash occurred in Lincoln on Sunday around around 10:45 p.m. According to authorities, a man driving a black Ford Taurus in the westbound lane of O Street slammed into a white Toyota Corolla traveling in the opposite direction. Both people in the latter vehicle were killed in the incident, police said.
They have not been identified but police said the victims are a 22-year-old and a 23-year-old, both of them women from Lincoln.
More than a dozen people were also left injured after the chaos, including one person who was listed in critical condition. Police said the others were transported to local hospitals with injuries that do not appear life threatening.
The driver of the black Ford Taurus was identified only as an 18-year-old man. He has not been named, but police said he was among those hospitalized.
Lincoln Police Chief Teresa Ewins during a new conference on Monday told reporters the crash occurred during “Americruise,” an event held in the city since the early 90s during which drivers to show off their vehicles by “cruising” through the city. Ewins said it did not appear either car was participating in the affair at the time of the crash.
“We do not believe nor is there any evidence this was an intentional act,” Lincoln police said in a statement.
Ewins added those involved appear to be the victims of tragic timing, telling reporters that the collision could have happened at any time.
“At the time of the collision there wasn’t a lot of people out,” Ewins said. “The cars were not flowing down street as normal during this event.”
