WINCHESTER, Ind. — Two people were arrested after a shooting that left two people injured in Winchester last week.
According to a pair of affidavits filed Thursday, Noel Cottrell and Kaitlyn Burhans were arrested late Wednesday evening.
Police became aware Burhans and Cottrell’s activity after they were called to the 200 block of South Brown Street on a report of a shooting involving a red sedan. As police were on their way to the scene, dispatchers told them a person had been shot in the area.
When police arrived at the scene, they met with two victims, both of whom claimed they had been shot. The first victim said he had been shot in the buttocks. The same victim gave police the bullet that had struck him.
The second victim claimed he had been shot in the leg.
When police asked the victims where the shooting had unfolded, they pointed out an area located about a block from where police found them. According to court documents, police located .22 size casings in the area the victims pointed them toward.
Law enforcement also quickly gathered video footage of the incident. Upon review of that video, police observed eight or 10 rounds being fired in the 200 block of South Brown Street.
The video given to police also showed a passenger in a red sedan pointing a firearm out the window of the vehicle. The driver of the red sedan continued south on Brown Street and ran a stop sign after the shooting.
The victims told police the individual who shot them had long hair and a throat tattoo. Per court records, officers had recently dealt with a man fitting that description.
In the previous incident, the man was wearing a “wife beater” shirt and blue jeans. During their encounter with the man, police identified him as Cottrell. Police reported that, during their first run-in with Cotrrell, he was threatening his neighbors.
The shooting video police watched depicted a man wearing a “wife beater” shirt in the passenger seat of a red sedan. A blond woman was driving the vehicle.
Court records indicate that police ultimately obtained the plate number of the red sedan involved in the shooting. The car was a Chevrolet Sonic registered to Burhans.
After they identified the vehicle, Winchester police told Indiana State Police and surrounding county sheriff’s departments about the shooting and the Sonic.
Madison County Sheriff’s deputies and state police later identified the car. It had stopped near U.S. Highway 36 and County Road 400 East in Madison County.
According to court documents, police eventually detained Burhans and Cottrell. The duo was taken back to Randolph County. Their vehicle was towed to Winchester to be searched after police obtained a warrant.
Burhans and Cotrell were booked into the Randolph County Jail on Wednesday night. They both face more than six preliminary charges each:
Noel Cottrell
- Two counts of attempted murder
- Two counts of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon
- Two counts of battery with a deadly weapon
- One county of unlawful carrying of a handgun
Kaitlyn Burhans
- Two counts of conspiracy to commit attempted murder
- Two counts of conspiracy to commit criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon
- Two counts of conspiracy to commit battery with a deadly weapon
- One count of assisting a criminal
Burhans appeared in court on Thursday. Cottrell is due for an initial hearing on Tuesday.
