INDIANAPOLIS — Two individuals were recently convicted of murder in Marion County after the fatal shooting of a funeral director in August 2022.
According to a news release from the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, Jashon Wallace-Carswell and Stacey Fuller were convicted after a four-day jury trial in relation to a shooting that killed Rev. James Dixon III.
Wallace-Carswell was found guilty on two counts of murder and one count of robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, a Level 2 felony. Fuller was found guilty on two counts of murder, one count of robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, a Level 2 felony, two counts of armed robbery, a Level 3 felony and one count of criminal recklessness, a Level 5 felony.
According to previous reports, Dixon was reportedly on the phone when he was shot and killed by Wallace-Carswell and Fuller. Dixon was confronted by the two, demanding that he hand over his wallet. The person that Dixon was talking to then heard gunshots.
This comes after police were tracking a car that was linked to Wallace-Carswell and Fuller in relation to a previous carjacking. An officer tracking the vehicle reportedly “observed five or six flashes” and saw Dixon fall to the ground after the shooting.
After a brief chase, Wallace-Carswell surrendered without incident at the scene, but Fuller ran from the scene, firing a single shot toward officers, previous reports state. Fuller was eventually taken into custody. During the incident, an officer returned fire but did not hit either suspect.
“Reverend Dixon was a beloved member of our community, who was known for putting others first and helping our neighbors say goodbye to loved ones,” Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears said in the release. “Tragically, the senseless actions of the defendants led to his family and friends toiling with the same pain the Reverend was known for easing. We are grateful to have secured justice on behalf of Reverend Dixon and his family and our thoughts remain with them during this difficult time.”
A sentencing hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Aug. 5, according to court documents.
