INDIANAPOLIS — A 14-year-old has been arrested by robbery detectives with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department in relation to a reported armed carjacking on Monday afternoon on the southeast side of Indianapolis.

According to a post on IMPD’s social media, officers responded to a report of an armed carjacking in the 7700 block of Sebastian Place at around 2:30 p.m. on Monday. When they arrived, they learned a person’s cell phone, cash and vehicle had been taken at gunpoint by two masked individuals.

At around 6 p.m. on Monday, IMPD officers located the vehicle that was reported stolen in the 7700 block of Blue Willow Drive. The post stated that the vehicle was occupied and the person, later identified as the 14-year-old, fled in the vehicle.

The 14-year-old reportedly drove the vehicle for a short distance before coming to a stop in a cornfield near E. Raymond Street. The teen then ran from officers on foot, the post read.

After a brief chase, officers reportedly located the 14-year-old hiding in a garage. The post read that the individual was then taken into custody. Officials said that the teen was found to be in possession of the person’s cell phone, as well as cash.

The 14-year-old, who was not identified by IMPD, was arrested on preliminary charges of reckless driving and robbery. The second individual who was reportedly involved in the carjacking was not in the vehicle when it was located by officers.

“I would ask that parents and community guardians be curious about what their young people are doing,” IMPD Deputy Chief Tanya Terry said in the post. “Juveniles engaging in reckless and unlawful behavior will not be tolerated.”

If anyone has information about the incident, they are asked to call the department’s robbery office at (317) 327-3475.
