FULTON, Ind. — An 11-year-old is dead and five others are in the hospital following an overnight house fire in Benton County.
Fire crews were called late Tuesday night to the 2500 East block of 600 North in Fowler on a call of a fully engulfed house fire.
The fire crews arrived to find two adults and four juveniles stuck inside the home, according to CBS affiliate WLFI. All six people were eventually removed from the home and taken to local hospitals with varying degrees of injury.
Yuliana Ortega Haro, an 11-year-old found inside the burning home, was taken to IU Arnett Hospital in Lafayette for treatment. Unfortunately, Haro later died from her injuries sustained in the fire.
The Tippecanoe County Coroner’s Office said Wednesday that a forensic autopsy is now being scheduled for Haro. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
“Our deepest sympathies and condolences go out to the family, and we hope they are respected during such a difficult time,” TCCO said in a release.
The Coroner’s Office is now working with the Benton County Sheriff’s Office, Fowler Police Department and Indiana State Fire Marshal to investigate the fire and Haro’s death.
