It is really hard to beat delicious sushi, and thankfully in Pittsburgh there is no shortage of great sushi restaurants to enjoy (despite our city not being near an ocean).
So in this one, we wanted to share ten of our favorite places for sushi in Pittsburgh. But, to be complete, we’re going to look at sushi as all things raw seafood and include sashimi, nigiri, and the classic roll here as there truly are gems for every type!
Andy’s Sushi Bar
It is hard to miss Andy’s Sushi Bar in the Strip District. This gem of a sushi stall is located inside Wholey’s and is the first station you see when entering the popular store.
Given its proximity to the store’s incredible fish department, fresh sushi is what you get here. Throw on a reasonable price point and stellar conversation with Andy himself, and you have reasons to go back again and again.
Andy’s is located inside Wholey’s at 1711 Penn Avenue in the Strip District.
Gi-Jin
When it comes to high-end sashimi and nigiri, it is hard to beat Gi-Jin in the Cultural District. This restaurant, part of the Richard DeShantz restaurant group, is known for bringing in some of the best fish from around the world for their immaculate creations.
But when we say premium, we really mean premium. Gi-Jin is one of the more expensive restaurants in the city for all things sushi, but it is really an instance of you get what you pay for. But just be warned, this one is quite small and reservations book up quite far in advance!
Gi-Jin is located at 208 6th Street in the Cultural District.
Golden Gai
Love everything about Gi-Jin but want a bit more in a slightly more approachable environment? Their sister izakaya restaurant, Golden Gai, in Bakery Square is for you!
While the sashimi and nigiri menu is admittedly, fairly similar to Gi-Jin, the addition of maki rolls, hot plates, and an even larger cocktail program makes for a delicious night out for a wealth of Japanese cuisine types- not just sushi.
But, much like their downtown restaurant, Golden Gai fills up with advanced reservations; however, is often a bit easier to get into due to being slightly larger.
Golden Gai is located at 116 Bakery Square Blvd in Bakery Square.
Penn Avenue Fish Co.
You know sushi is going to be good when the sushi counter and fishmonger is in the same building, and you get just that at Penn Avenue Fish Co. in the Strip District.
Not only do we love this shop for the fresh seafood we can take to go, their delicious and reasonably priced sushi menu makes us going back again and again. But if you’re like us, be careful, you may go in for a few rolls and walk out with salmon, scallops, and more to cook for later (worth it)!
Penn Avenue Fish Co. is located at 2208 Penn Avenue in the Strip District.
Mount Everest Sushi
As much as we love the highest-end seafood we can get, sometimes we just want to eat a ton of sushi at a reasonable price. At Mount Everest Sushi in Oakland, we got just that.
The platters and combos are some of the best value here, although we like to get a smaller sushi platter and add on a few premium rolls to round out our feast. A little mix of everything without spending too much? We’re in!
Mount Everest Sushi is located at 128 Oakland Avenue in Oakland.
Umami
Umami is a second excellent izakaya in Pittsburgh that is as much of a bar as it is a full-service restaurant. Get a drink and a round of food, enjoy, and repeat.
Although this one has a number of excellent Japanese cuisine styles, including robatayaki, small plates, and noodle dishes, the sushi menu is amongst some of the best in the city. Here, you can pick your base seafood and choose whether or not you want it served as nigiri, sashimi, or temaki (handroll) which really gives a number of excellent options to taste your way around the menu.
But for those who want even more seafood goodness, don’t skip over their chirashi bowls!
Umami is located at 202 38th Street in Lawrenceville.
Mola
If you’re looking for high-quality sushi in a more approachable atmosphere, don’t overlook Mola and their two locations (one in East Liberty and another at Novo Asian Food Hall in the Strip District).
This one is always a delight as the restaurant could hold up as one of the city’s very best sushi joints without having the pretense that you would expect from fine dining. It is just high-quality, delicious sushi. Don’t overlook any specials they may have on at any given time, too!
Mola has two locations, one at 6018 Penn Avenue in East Liberty and one at Novo Asian Food Hall at 1931 Smallman Street in the Strip District.
Otaru
If high-end vibes and an incredible view of Pittsburgh’s skyline is what you seek, Otaru on Grandview Avenue on Mount Washington is for you.
This sushi restaurant has a mix of everything, from fresh fish to hot dishes, and comes together with an ambiance (and view) that is really tough to beat. The only downside? Otaru may clock in as one of, if not the most expensive sushi restaurant in the city. Still, sushi with a view is sometimes deserving of a premium to some.
Otaru is located at 1200 Grandview Avenue in Mount Washington.
The Warren
When you think of food options at neighborhood cocktail bars, your first thought likely turns to burgers and sandwiches and other approachable pub food- not sushi. Well, at The Warren in downtown Pittsburgh, you get both!
At first, we thought the combination of burgers and sushi was rather odd. But sometimes a nice sushi roll just hits right. Whether you’re having it as an appetizer with a happy hour round or for a nightcap to wind down the night, it is hard to beat a cocktail and sushi roll combo at The Warren!
The Warren is located at 245 7th Street in downtown Pittsburgh.
Diners 2+1
Squirrel Hill is home to many wonderful Asian restaurants that have sushi components on the menu, and one of our very favorites is Diners 2+1. This unassuming restaurant has an impressive spread of reasonably priced sushi that won’t break the bank.
But if you want something just a bit different, don’t overlook the Sushi Sandwich Roll, which includes spicy tuna, salmon, crab, avocado and tamago, in a soy wrap that looks, well, like a sandwich! This one is quite the inventive roll and is a unique option you won’t find anywhere else.
Diners 2+1 is located at 1722 Murray Avenue in Squirrel Hill.
