SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The city of Sturgis has attracted 10 applicants for its new position of city administrator, a city news release said this week.

The council is set to review the applications at a Jan. 6 meeting and narrow the candidate list.

Two applications for the position were incomplete, according to the release.

The Sturgis City Council decided to pursue a full-time city administrator position after the city’s residents voted in favor of replacing a city manager form of government.

The city administrator will be responsible for the administrative duties of the city and be responsible to the mayor, according to the job description posted with the South Dakota Municipal League. Other duties include preparing an annual budget, direct the hiring, reassignment, and promotion of all city employees as well as a number of other assigned duties.

The listed salary was $130,000 to $140,000 per year. The salary depended on qualifications and experience.

Sturgis also specified a minimum of 10 years experience described as “Minimum of ten (10) years progressive responsibility as a City Manager or equivalent managerial position in an organization of comparable complexity.”

The position was posted from Nov. 12 through Dec. 4, according to the municipal league posting.

Sturgis is in the midst of proposed budget cutting including the position of the city’s director of the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

Council member Kevin Forrester is the city’s acting mayor. Former mayor Angela Wilkerson resigned on Oct. 11. She had been elected mayor by the council after former mayor Mark Carstensen abruptly resigned on Feb. 13. Wilkerson resigned as petitions to recall her were circulating in the community.
