BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — One person perished after a house caught fire early Monday morning on the outskirts of Bloomington.
According to the Monroe Fire Protection District, firefighters and deputies with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department were called to a home in the 5100 block of S. Fairfax Road at around 1:15 a.m. Firefighters arriving on scene reported heavy smoke coming from the front of the home.
Crews quickly learned that a resident was believed to be inside the home. Firefighters quickly made entry and were able to locate the victim on the kitchen floor despite thick smoke and zero visibility.
The victim was rushed to a hospital but unfortunately succumbed to their injuries. The Monroe County Coroner’s Office has not yet determined a cause of death. At this time, the deceased’s identity has not been released.
The Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office determined the fire was accidental and broke out due to discarded smoking material.
