VERMILLION COUNTY, Ind. — A person was killed during a five-car crash on Interstate 74 in Vermillion County on Saturday.

According to a press release, Indiana State Police were dispatched to mile marker two of I-74 westbound around 10:30 p.m. to investigate a five-vehicle crash. ISP has confirmed one person was killed and two others were injured in the crash.

Police believe the crash began when a driver travelling eastbound on I-74 crossed through the interstate’s median and struck a westbound car. ISP indicated that its investigators do not know exactly why the eastbound driver crossed through the median and entered the westbound lanes of the interstate.

After the crash between the eastbound and westbound vehicles, two other drivers stopped to provide assistance to the crash victims. The assisting drivers’ cars were then struck by another driver, bringing the total number of crashed cars to five.

The driver of the eastbound vehicle that first caused the crash was pronounced dead at the scene by the Vermillion County Coroner’s Office. VCCO will release the decedent’s name once their family has been properly notified of their death.

The driver of the westbound vehicle that was struck by the eastbound driver was transported from the scene to an Indianapolis hospital via medical helicopter. ISP could not confirm the exact condition of the individual who was taken from the scene via helicopter.

The driver of the fifth vehicle involved in the crash was taken to a hospital near the crash scene with non-life-threatening injuries. ISP reported that the drivers who tried to provide assistance to the first two crash victims were not injured during the incident.

The Indiana State Police Crash Reconstruction Team is still investigating the crash. As of this article’s publication, no additional information on the crash had been made available.
